Charles Dowding MasterclassThursday 5th May 2022 – 10:30am – 4:30pmIn the Walled GardenA Master Class to enthuse and inform you about easier and time saving ways to grow tasty and health giving food.

There is plenty to see in the walled kitchen garden and you will learn a vast amount in one day, about all aspects of growing for food, and gardening generally.

 

Although it’s a large garden, the methods I teach equally applicable for making just one bed, from which you can scale up if you wish.In fact we’ll have the opportunity to create a new no dig bed, even to plant it on the same day. No dig can be rapid, and that is one of the paybacks from investing in compost when you start, and spending time making compost as you continue.We shall study compost making, with a look at how the compost heaps are doing.

Which ingredients are good to use, in what proportions, how big a heap to have, whether it needs to get hot, how long to leave it and whether turning is worthwhile. Then a look at assessing the readiness of compost, when to spread it and how to deal with the weed seeds.In addition, I discuss other types of compost and the best ones to buy, plus how long you may or may not need to keep them in a heap before spreading.

I explain the details of surface composting to feed both soil and plants for a whole year. In one dressing and with no other plant feeds needed.I will cover how to become skilled at propagation and how little space you actually need to grow hundreds of plants at a time. We look at module trays, compost to use, sowing methods including multi-sowing, and some best timings.

Early May for example, is excellent for sowing Brussel sprouts, autumn cabbages and kale.You learn time saving tips in many aspects of growing, from watering and plant care, to less weeding, and increased harvests in relation to the time and space given. Yield per square metre is a key goal, to save time and effort.The course includes a vegetarian lunch cooked by Ashburnham’s Executive Chef using produce from the walled Kitchen Garden.The masterclass is limited to 20 people
